Custom Embroidery Ordering Tips: From Start to Finish

Custom Embroidery

Custom embroidery is a great way to personalize clothing and accessories. Customized embroidery products make wonderful gifts, for loved ones or yourself. Embroidered garments last longer and immediately increase the value of the product. The mainstream market charges anywhere from $10 to $20 more for a hoodie, for example, depending on how intricate the embroidery detail is and the quality of the thread being used.

When you set up a custom order with SweetArt Workshop, you're going to get great quality for an affordable price. However, it may seem a bit daunting at first when deciding what to order, how to order, and even what your file type and layout should be in order to get a successful end product. Not to fear, we're here to help you every step of the way!

So You Want To Order A Custom Embroidered Hoodie... (or anything really)

For full instructions on how to order custom products, be sure to check out our Custom page where you'll find a form that takes you through the steps to complete the order. If you, for example, wanted to get a hoodie with some embroidery on it, you first choose the hoodie you would like, your size and color preferences. You will also need to determine if you want to opt for our Standard Embroidery, which allows you up to 6 thread colors, or the Unlimited Embroidery, which allows an unlimited number of colors.

Next, you will be prompted to upload or send in your embroidery file to our email address that's been set up to only accept custom order requests. (If you have any questions during the process, please reach out! We're more than happy to walk you through it!)

File Uploading Tips:

  • Avoid small text and thin lines
    • The font might not be legible if it's too small to detect in the embroidery machine's system
    • Aim to set the text to at least 0.25'' in height and at least 0.05'' thick
    • This will make the design minimal yet still visible from a distance
  • Don't use negative space elements
    • While your design can have a transparent background, the empty spaces might not come out as crisp
    • Opt to use a solid color to fill in the background
  • Avoid photographic images
    • While we strive to produce high-quality embroidery and we're very capable of attempting to embroider high-quality images onto garments, the detail of the image may be distorted in the outcome
    • We can recreate the image in an embroidery design, but if you'd prefer an identical image being imposed onto a garment, might we suggest our other printed products! We also make custom DTG and DTF printed garments, giving you even more options to bring your custom designs to life!
  • Think about the weight of the garment
    • In case your embroidery patch is thick, opt for a thicker garment to reduce the chances of the fabric puckering around the design

Next Steps

Now, you've got the basics. You've chosen a thick enough garment to support your embroidery design, you know the minimum size the design should be in, and you have a better idea of how many options you have to work with on a custom embroidery product.

The most important step to focus on is getting the design. If you already have a design ready to go, you can head on over to our Custom ordering page to get started! If you need help with creating your design, we'd love to help you bring it to life.
